The Force is an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together. However, some individuals hear its call louder than others. This is determined by the concentration of midi-chlorians in their cells.

The Scale

Average Human: ~2,500 counts. Can't feel the Force.
Jedi Candidate: ~7,000 counts. Standard recruit.
Master Yoda: ~20,000 counts. High sensitivity.
Anakin Skywalker: >20,000 counts. Off the charts.

Nature vs. Nurture

While genetics (or immaculate conception by the Force) determine your potential, only training unlocks it. A high-potential individual without training is just "lucky" or "intuitive." They pilot pods well, dodge blasters by accident, and get bad feelings about things.
