Warp Speed Converter

Star Trek Warp Factors to Light Speed.

📜 The Origins

Converts Star Trek Warp Factors (both TOS and TNG scales) into multiples of the speed of light (c). It's the essential tool for every navigator on the bridge.

🚀 Master the Tool

Pick a ship, which sets both the warp scale it runs on and the factor it can reach, then pick where you are leaving from and where you are going. The chart measures the real separation between the two worlds and the readout gives you the crossing time.

Same Factor, Other Scale

The Enterprise-D runs on the 24th century scale, where warp 6 is 392c. Call the same factor on the 23rd century scale and it is 216c, slower. The two cross over at warp 9, and only the later scale has a wall: warp 10 is infinite velocity, so no ship reaches it and this slider stops short.

Engaging the Warp Drive

In the Star Trek universe, the Warp Drive uses dilithium crystals to generate a subspace bubble, allowing the ship to move faster than light (FTL) without breaking relativity.

The Scales (TOS vs. TNG)

  • The Original Series (TOS): Used a cubic scale: warp factor cubed, times c. Warp 9 was fast, but they often went faster.
  • The Next Generation (TNG): Recalibrated. Warp 10 is "Infinite Velocity" (occupying all points in the universe simultaneously).
  • * Warp 1 = 1c (Speed of Light)
  • * Warp 9 = 1516c
  • * Warp 9.9 = 3053c
  • * Warp 9.99 = 7912c (The curve is exponential!)

"Make it So"

Even at Warp 9, the galaxy is huge. Crossing the Federation (8,000 light years) would take over 5 years. That's why Voyager (70,000 light years away) was stranded for decades.

Why the Route Matters

Warp factors only give you a speed. The crossing time also needs a distance, and distance in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants is not a single line. Qo'noS and Cardassia sit on opposite sides of the Federation, so the run between them is far longer than either world's distance from Earth. Every world on this page carries a position rather than a distance, and the pair you choose is measured.

Four of those positions are real measured stars: Sol, Alpha Centauri at 4.4 light years, 40 Eridani A at 16.5 (Vulcan) and Procyon at 11.4 (Andoria). The rest are fiction and follow the licensed star charts, so treat them as approximate.

Pro tips
01In the TNG scale, Warp 10 is infinite speed (and might turn you into a lizard).
02Warp 9.9 is significantly faster than Warp 9.
03Scotty says he can give you more power, but he's usually lying about the time it takes.

The Fine Print (FAQ)

Can we go Warp 10?
Tom Paris did it in the Delta Flyer. He evolved into a hyper-evolved salamander and had babies with Captain Janeway. Let's not talk about it.
What is Transwarp?
Borg technology. It utilizes subspace corridors (like wormholes) to travel instantly, bypassing the Warp limit.
Is this real physics?
Miguel Alcubierre proposed a real 'Warp Drive' metric in 1994 that shrinks space in front and expands it behind. It's theoretically possible but needs negative energy.
